How to breathe new life into a drum that's paid its dues!
This is a restored "loaner" drum from the Mapex/ Beyond Shimano project, originally made in 1998. The shell is 7ply maple, 8mm thick, with 8mm reinforcing rings and coated in nitrocellulose lacquer. It might have been a prototype of the Mapex Beyond Shimano Collaboration Series created on December 20, 1998 - Shimano San isn't sure, but feels like it is.
Although they were still functional, the lugs and strainer were quite badly scratched, so Shimano San replaced them when he restored the drum in 2019. He remarks that he can hear how the sound has matured over the intervening 20 years, and he'd expect that to continue. The lacquer had darkened over time - the text says "become a little burnt" - except where covered by the hoops. Personally, I would imagine this is not least due to being used in smoky clubs and bars, and I think it gives the drum proper character. The surface had some cracking, so Shimano San buffed it up, then used high quality guitar cleaner to bring back the shine.
Now it's fit for another 20 years of rocking out.

レストレーション、、、、
こちらのスネアは1998年12月20日に作成したMapex Beyond Shimano Collaboration Seriesの試作？だったような気がします。リースやローンナーキットとして貸し出し品等として最近まで使用していました。ラグやストレーナーにはスレやキズが沢山ついていましたが、今回のレストレーションにて新品に交換いたしました。シェルはオールメイプル7 ply, 8 mm厚 に8 mm厚のレインフォースメント仕様です。鳴りは頗る良く、20年近く経過した鳴りの成長、変化を感じられる１台です。ニトロセルロースラッカー塗装ですので、上下のヘッドで隠れるところ以外はかなり焼け気味です。部分的にクラックが出てきてます。再度バフ掛けを施し、ギター用の高級クリーナーでピカピカにいたしました。まだ十分使えるラグやストレイナーでしたがあえて新品にしてやりました。上質な鳴り、綺麗な倍音が出てます。やはり木胴は音の経年変化が期待できますので可愛いです。
