Although Mapex (Music And Percussion EXcellence) was founded in 1989, this is the earliest catalogue available. 

Pre-Black Panther, the top-end snares fall under the Orion Branding - Orion Custom for Maple and Orion Studio for Birch. 

Notes:

• All shells feature the original Black Square badges with gold writing.
• All the Orion series snares feature Freedom Lugs.
• Maple snares deeper than 4.5" came with Die-Cast hoops, Birch snares and 4.5" deep Maple snares came with Powerhoops.
• All snares feature Power Strainers - there are no real Piccolo sizes (the shallowest is 4.5").
• Orion snares were available in four colours  (codes are English/German catalogue)

• The kits reflect the trend at the time for fairly deep toms, resulting in really long lugs, especially on the floor toms. The tom holders look like they would give you a hernia!
• Kit series included Orion (Studio and Custom), Saturn (Studio and Stage, Maple-Mahogany-Maple), Mars and Venus (Mahogany)
