Overview
Just two of these plain maple models were made to order by Shimano San in late 2018. A customer who ordered a piccolo snare (linked below) from him also wanted a deeper model. The "plain" look of is primarily down to budget constraints, although Shimano San does say that he liked the soft feel and tone of the drums.
The frequency response is designed to be "Donshari" (ドンシャリ), which basically emphasis the bottom and top frequencies. Yes I had to look that up.*

* It's a slang word from "Don" (a low, booming sound) and "Shari" (a high sound). If you're interested, the others are "Kamaboko" (かまぼこ) - emphasising the mid-frequencies (Kamaboko is a type of dried fish that is pointed at both ends and fat in the middle) and "Flat" (フラット) which is...well, flat. Yes I had to look "Kamaboko" up too. Even I can translate "Flat" though. 😉
